about reptiles

Reptiles are the animals most wrapped in legend. Here are 19 common myths, debunked by our keepers after 36 years of observation and sharing these misunderstood creatures with the world.

They are actually poikilothermic and ectothermic: their body temperature depends directly on the external environment. A snake in a room at 20°C is at 20°C. In a room at 30°C, it is at 30°C.

Since they don't burn calories to maintain a stable internal temperature as we do, the expression "cold-blooded" is a simplification — but in summer, their temperature can be higher than ours.

False, even though they have no external ear. They possess an inner ear that perceives low frequencies. Ground vibrations are picked up by their ventral scales and the skin of their jaw.

But their most developed sense remains smell: with their forked tongue, they collect molecules from the air and send them to the Jacobson's organ located on the palate — a fine analysis that gives them temperature, humidity, pH, and odour particles.

They actually shed their skin to stay clean. Since they don't burn calories to regulate their internal temperature, they need very clean scales to properly absorb heat from the environment.

Each scale works a bit like a small solar panel. A dirty or worn panel works less efficiently. Generally, a snake sheds once a month, sometimes every two months depending on wear.

A persistent myth. If a boa stretches out along your body, it is not to assess whether it can swallow you. A boa that leaves its terrarium is no longer at the vital temperature it knows: it is cold and looking for warmth.

What is the best radiator in a house? The human body, which gives off 37°C. It simply presses close to you to warm itself up. This is as endearing as it is disappointing for horror film fans.

Certainly not. We eat 3 to 4 times a day because we burn a lot of calories just to maintain our 37°C. Of everything we ingest, only a small portion is used for movement and thinking.

A snake, on the other hand, devotes 95% of its food intake to living and moving. Furthermore, prey is eaten whole (bones, teeth, claws — nothing goes to waste). A snake can go several weeks without eating.

Good to know: obesity in a reptile is a real danger — it can make the animal infertile and cause premature ageing.

Of the approximately 4,000 snake species recorded in the world, only around 600 are venomous, and fewer than 200 are genuinely dangerous to humans.

The vast majority flee contact with humans and pose no threat. At Reptiland, you can observe side by side completely harmless species (boas, ball pythons, corn snakes) and some of the most venomous in the world (cobras, mambas, Gaboon vipers).

False. Their skin is perfectly dry and smooth to the touch. The scales are made of keratin — exactly the same protein as our hair and nails.

To the touch, they are rather pleasant and slightly cool (since they are at ambient temperature). Many people with a phobia discover this with surprise during our desensitisation sessions.

As we have seen, snakes have no external ear and hear very poorly. What they follow in the snake charmer's act are the movements of the flute and the vibrations of the ground.

The snake (often a monocled cobra) adopts its defensive posture because it feels threatened — not because it is "charmed". The open basket + the moving flute = a cobra ready to strike. Spectacular, but far from the romantic image.

Impossible. The shell is not a "home": it is an integral part of the skeleton. It is fused to the spine and ribs.

A turtle without its shell is like a human without a rib cage: it simply does not exist. The cartoon showing a turtle removing its shell to go swimming is charming fiction.

Land tortoises, yes, are slow (1 to 2 km/h). But sea turtles are excellent swimmers: the leatherback sea turtle can reach 35 km/h in the water.

And contrary to their reputation, turtles are also capable of memorising routes, recognising faces, and solving simple problems. Not so slow-minded after all.

This is the most persistent misconception about chameleons. In reality, these colour changes are primarily linked to mood, temperature, and communication between individuals.

A stressed chameleon turns dark, a displaying male shows vivid colours to impress a female or drive off a rival, and a chameleon sunbathing darkens its skin to better absorb heat. Camouflage is a side effect, not the main function.

True from a mechanical standpoint: crocodiles do have lacrimal glands that produce tears to keep their eyes moist. They can sometimes be seen flowing when the animal eats, due to the pressure of the jaws compressing the ducts.

However, these tears convey no emotion: no regret, no sadness. The expression "crocodile tears" describes a show of grief that is feigned, without sincerity.

Surprising but true. Far from the image of the unfeeling predator, the female crocodile actively incubates her eggs, turns them, fiercely defends the nest, and — at the moment of hatching — gently carries her hatchlings in her mouth to bring them to the water.

She then protects her young for several weeks, sometimes several months. A complex parental behaviour, closer to that of birds than to other reptiles.

False. Research in ethology has greatly changed our understanding in recent years. Several reptile species display structured social behaviours:

Crocodiles protect their offspring and some hunt in groups. Bearded dragons emit visual signals (arm-waving for submission). Some geckos live in stable small family groups. And iguanas recognise their conspecifics individually.

The image of the cold, asocial reptile belongs to another era.

False. Most reptiles are oviparous (they lay eggs), but some species are ovoviviparous (the eggs hatch inside the mother's body) — or even viviparous in the strict sense.

Examples present at Reptiland: the asp viper and the boa constrictor give birth to fully formed young, without laying an external egg. This is a widespread strategy among snakes living in cold climates — internal incubation ensures better survival of the young.

Astonishing but perfectly true. In crocodiles and certain turtles, the sex of the young is not determined by chromosomes but by the incubation temperature of the eggs. This is called temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD).

In the Nile crocodile, for example: between 31 and 34°C, mostly males are produced. Outside this narrow window, mostly females are produced. Climate change therefore directly threatens the sex ratio balance in the wild.

This is the number one misconception that stops families from visiting Reptiland in summer. The heat from the terrariums is strictly reserved for the animals, not for visitors.

Reptiland's public space is entirely covered and air-conditioned all year round. You can visit comfortably even in the middle of August, when it is 35°C outside. Many regulars actually come to cool down here during heat waves.

Many people think a reptile must inevitably get bored in captivity because it is often motionless. Yet reptiles do not have the same needs as mammals. When they have a terrarium suited to their character and species — warm zones, cooler zones, elements to explore, hiding spots, etc. — they can express their natural behaviours.

The problem is therefore not captivity itself, but a poor or unsuitable environment. A well-kept reptile can live in good conditions without suffering from "boredom".

One should not confuse human emotions with reptile emotions. Research shows that they can experience different emotional states such as stress, fear, or well-being. Even if they do not express them in the same way as mammals, their behaviours show that they respond to their environment and their experiences.
